Wondering what to do over the next few days? Come to town! CUPAR’S BIG WEEKEND – there’s a lot going on!

From tidying and volunteering to fairground rides, local shopping, history, heritage, live music and a fascinating afternoon of talks, there’s something happening for just about everyone. And it all starts now …

The BIG Tidy …

Help us plan Cupar’s BIG Tidy. Cupar Development Trust is inviting everyone interested in making our town a little cleaner, greener and brighter to come along to Castlehill Community Centre at 4pm on Thursday 17th.

This is the planning get-together ahead of Cupar’s BIG Tidy Day on Monday 21st September.

We’ll take a short walk around the town, identify places and spaces that could benefit from a bit of attention and talk about what we can achieve together.

There’s no obligation to commit to anything enormous. This is about people contributing what they can — young and old, individuals, families, groups, businesses and organisations.

A cleaner street. A greener space. A brighter corner of Cupar. Sometimes lots of small contributions can make a very big difference.

The BIG wee funfair!

Stirling’s Family Fun Fair is also rolling into Cupar.

The fair is at Fluthers Car Park from Wednesday 16th until Sunday 20th September, bringing rides, lights and plenty of traditional fairground fun.

Opening hours are 5pm–9.30pm on weekdays, 1pm–9pm on Saturday and 1pm–5pm on Sunday, with free entry.

So whether you’re six, sixteen or considerably older but still quite partial to the dodgems, there’s another reason to head into town!

Saturday is market day!

Saturday brings another familiar sight to the town centre as Cupar Market returns to Crossgate from 10am until 2pm.

Organised by Markets Between Two Firths, the monthly market brings together independent producers and creatives, with a particular emphasis on local and Scottish products and sustainability.

It’s a great opportunity to shop locally, discover something different and support the independent traders who help make these events possible. Find out more about Cupar Market⁠ via this link.

There is also a whole host of shops, cafes and eateries to enjoy in and around the town centre – arts & crafts, gifts galore, fashion, health & beauty care, homewares and so much more. Check out our Shopping Directory via this link – and search for food & drink options via this link.

And when you’ve finished browsing the stalls and local shops, there’s plenty more happening just a short walk away.

Cupar’s history comes alive!

At 2pm, the focus moves to County Hall in the County Buildings, where Three Estates Cupar is hosting a free afternoon of talks and presentations celebrating the town and district’s remarkable heritage.

The programme runs from 2pm until 3.30pm and includes:

• Talks about Cupar and district in the sixteenth century
• A formal book presentation to the Royal Burgh of Cupar
• Book signing

Among the subjects being explored are:

• Women’s Words: The Language of Women in Early Modern Fife
• The Life of Ordinary Folk in C16 Cupar
• St Andrews and Pittenweem
• The Cupar Riots of 1552 and
• The Lindsay 1552 Cupar Proclamation

There will also be an update on the possibility of creating an Arts & Culture Hub within the County Buildings.

And behind much of the afternoon sits one of the most extraordinary chapters in Cupar’s story.

Sir David Lindsay of the Mount — poet, playwright, courtier and diplomat — has a particularly important connection with the town. His celebrated Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis was first performed in Cupar in 1552, an event which gives the town an important place in the story of Scottish theatre.

The County Hall event is free and open to all, although advance registration is required. Booking sheets are available in the County Buildings and Cupar Library, or places can be booked by emailing Three Estates Cupar via this link.

Make a day of it!

Put everything together and Saturday 19th September is shaping up to be a cracking day to spend in Cupar!

Come into town in the morning. Have a wander around the market. Visit the shops. Stop for coffee or lunch. Head along to County Hall for the heritage event.

Love music? There’s also a free Music Marathon being held at St James The Great on St Catherine Street. There will be morning prayers topping and tailing the day (at 9.30 and 4pm) with an array of music in between …

And, if you still have the energy afterwards, the Family Fun Fair will be running until 9pm.

Community first …

The weekend’s events is a combination that says so much about Cupar – our unique heritage, our businesses, our community, friends and families all coming together to celebrate our town.

Sunday: one more chance for some fairground fun! The funfair continues on Sunday from 1pm until 5pm, providing one last opportunity for the family to enjoy the rides before the fair packs up and moves on.

And then, on Monday, it’s your turn to roll up …

CUPAR’S BIG TIDY DAY

After all the weekend activity, Monday 21st September brings the culmination of Cupar Development Trust’s BIG Tidy initiative. This is when we roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Community teams will be helping to tidy and spruce up Cupar, tackling some of the places identified during Thursday’s walkabout. And this really is intended to be an all-ages, all-abilities community effort.

You don’t have to be able to spend the whole day with us. You don’t need any specialist skills. And you certainly don’t need to be an Olympic-standard litter picker! What matters is taking part.

A few days this weekend gives all the opportunity to volunteer together, play together, shop locally, celebrate our history, support our town centre, enjoy live music and then – when many hands make light work – come together to make Cupar look that little bit better! Different events. Different organisations. Different generations. One community.
