Maisie & Mac, Gift Shop & Gallery, celebrates 15 years in Cupar this month and – at a time when there is so much negativity about the health of our High Streets – we think there is much to be positive about!

As a thank you to their many regular customers who have supported the business over the years, the shop will host an evening ‘do’ between 5 & 7.30 on Friday 10th April, with merchandise giveaways, a prize draw to win a £50 voucher, and the opening of a new exhibition in the downstairs gallery.

Owner Alison Strachan says: “We know that we are very young in comparison to some very established businesses in town – run by people who have been welcoming and supportive of Maisie & Mac – but we are proud to have provided beautiful, interesting, quirky, well-made items, many made by individual UK based artists & makers, for 15 years.”

Alison adds: “Some of our early customers confided in us at our first anniversary that they were relieved to see us still here having thought we would not survive setting up in a recession in a small town like Cupar! But Cupar people – and those from surrounding villages – took us into their hearts and we have worked hard to source gifts & art that met their need for presents, home décor or for art with soul. We are privileged to be the ‘go to’ for gifts and ‘something different’ as people tell us.”

Town hub …

The shop has become “a hub for town chat and laughter” and Alison says that makes working in Cupar a real pleasure.

As well as queries about artists and makers, they are asked about where to find parking and public toilets, advice on birthday and wedding gifts, about historical research, places to scatter ashes, where to eat in town, and everything in between!

Alison cites surviving “tricky national financial times, lengthy disruptive pavement works, almost a year hidden under scaffolding, and Covid!” all thanks to their customers who like to see and feel products before purchase, like that they can find something different at a moment’s notice, and like to spend time with a human while they make a purchase.

Many introduce their friends and visitors to the shop and they, in turn, become regulars – people coming from Dundee, St Andrews, Edinburgh and further afield to enjoy the Maisie & Mac experience.
