In the frame
There is a wonderful exhibition at Maisie & Mac in Cupar celebrating the store and gallery’s 15th anniversary – featuring two artists whose work was there at the very beginning.
Alison Strachan has a love of colour and texture inspires and underpins her work. Alison grew up on the northwest coast of Scotland – on the edge of a sea loch – and is drawn to featuring wild and remote landscapes in her atmospheric paintings in both soft pastel and acrylic.
Having not used watercolours for over 30 years, she was prompted to try them again by a relative who saw some older work and the pieces here – in ink and watercolour – are the result.

Alison also returned to “experiments with more abstract themes in acrylic“, encouraged by a customer who had purchased one of her works previously.
She has always drawn and painted but since opening Maisie & Mac 15 years ago, she has not had a lot of time to pursue her first love. The mixture of styles and media used for this exhibition is an expression of her excitement at getting back into painting!
Her original work has been collected by UK customers and has found its way to various other corners of the world. Her prints are stocked at Maisie & Mac and in other Scottish outlets.
Award-winning
Nichola Martin is an award winning artist who lives locally and was also one of the artists in the gallery’s very first exhibition back in April 2011.
As a mature student, Nichola completed an HND in art & design at Elmwood College before graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee in 2007 with a BA Hons, Fine Art Drawing & Painting.
Exhibited widely, she is known for her focus on still-life and figurative work in both oils and charcoal. A highly skilled draughtswoman, her work is sought after for paintings requiring a high level of technical detail… including, for instance, a commission for the late British author John Le Carre of all his published books. As you can see from her pieces, she is a master of her craft in oils!

Nichola has numerous works in private collections in the UK and internationally. As well as working on her own drawings & paintings she holds workshops & classes throughout the year.
This exhibition – in the basement gallery at Maisie & Mac on the corner of Cupar’s Crossgate and St Catherine Street – will run until the end of June.
