Making the transition …

At Cupar’s U3A next branch meeting, Alistair Macleod, Manager of Transition at St Andrews University will be speaking – and you are invited to attend to discover more …

St Andrew’s Transition team and volunteers work with local groups in projects concerned with:

  • Sustainable transport
  • Waste reduction
  • Food
  • Biodiversity

Alistair arrived at Transition from the Dundee based charity Solar Cities Scotland where he managed a team of staff delivering behaviour change projects and promoting sustainable energy. Prior to this he was manager of a Development Trust based in Dundee that undertook Social, Physical and Environmental projects in an effort to build a sustainable urban community as part of an £85 million award winning regeneration scheme.

After studying a Marine Biology degree at Queen Mary’s he spent three years at sea – working for an environmental charity before settling in London with stints at Greenpeace, City Farm and regeneration charity Groundwork. In his spare time he enjoys sailing, working in his allotment and running a local car club, and Wheelshare.

Cupar & District u3a was launched on 22 April 2009 and has members all over North Fife – from as far afield as Newburgh, Upper Largo, Tayport, Ladybank, Auchtermuchty – and all sites in between. They are one of two u3as in Fife – the other is based in Kirkcaldy.

Cupar u3a is part of a world-wide movement which was founded in 1972. The u3a was set up to encourage local people to draw together talent from among retired or semi-retired people who have an interest in sharing their knowledge, in widening their horizons and in learning, studying and researching topics. The Third Age refers to the period of time after the First Age of childhood dependence and the Second Age of full-time employment and parental responsibility.

Currently, the branch has over 300 members and there are more than 40 activity groups in which the members can participate.
