Counting down to The Open …
All eyes of the golfing world will be focused on north-east Fife this summer when The Open returns to the home of the game in St Andrews. And on May 12th, residents and businesses across Cupar are invited to a Community Engagement Session to discover more on what the event means for our area …
The Open – golf’s original championship that was first played at the Old Course in St Andrews in 1873 – will be staged from 10th – 17th July. This year’s return marks the 30th occasion the Old Course has hosted the historic championship – and will also celebrate the event’s 150th anniversary with record levels of attendance expected, making the 2022 Open the biggest Championship yet.
You are invited to the Castlehill Community Centre in Cupar for a drop-in session on Thursday 12th May. Attending will be those organisations intrinsically involved in the countdown and delivery of this year’s Open – including the R&A, Police Scotland and Fife Council.
The drop-in will run from 3pm until 6pm and is being hosted by CuparNow. It will incorporate the official launch of Food & Drink Trails Fife – a project developed by CuparNow in partnership with Cupar Development Trust … showcasing the area’s food & drink offering with a series of trails that start and finish in Cupar.
Bill Pagan, Chair of Cupar Development Trust, says: “Our area has an amazing food and drink offering. What began as a discussion around Cupar and almost 40 businesses in the sector grew to consider how all our area’s food & drink might be best showcased on a digital platform.”
Bill adds: “Cupar is north-east Fife’s historic market town. In medieval times, it was at the centre of what was known as the ‘liberty’ where all produce from the area had to be sold at the town’s market. Today, our district mirrors much of that ancient ‘liberty’ and we are very proud to be showcasing all that is available to those living in and visiting this corner of Scotland.”
As part of this launch, Christopher Trotter will be delivering a food & drink showcase – featuring seasonal produce from Cupar’s businesses …
Christopher has many years of experience in the hospitality world including running hotels and restaurants as well as a Michelin starred kitchen. He has trained staff at all levels of the industry – achieving industry awards and training qualifications. He says: “My passion is for seasonal food sourced locally and I have been honoured by my region with the title Fife Food Ambassador, for my work in promoting the food and hospitality world in Fife.”
Christopher’s showcase will run from 4pm until 6pm at the event and we will share more on the event via our social media channels as we countdown to the 12th May.
Where to find the event …
You’ll find the Castlehill Community Centre off Castle Street – just up the hill from the Corn Exchange.
Before, during and after …
The Open provides an enviable opportunity to showcase north-east Fife as a destination to a global audience – whether visiting as spectators or watching from their own homes. There will be more than 6,000 support staff in the countdown and through the event plus a further 2,000 volunteers. And research shows that over two-thirds of those who attend The Open are likely to return within a year.
To help support businesses wishing to engage with The Open, a toolkit has been created that provides tips and information needed to help businesses make the most. You can download a copy of the toolkit by clicking on the image below …
