In the latest of our KnowHow series, we caught up with Ian Whyte who runs WhyteGoods based in Cupar.

WhyteGoods is a domestic appliance repair service. Ian’s company covers Cupar – and extends west to Auchtermuchty, Falkland, Glenrothes, Newburgh and Strathmiglo – and east to Dundee, Newport, St Andrews and Tayport.

Ian explains the work they undertake, saying: “We repair washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, cookers and hobs, cooker hoods and range cookers.” They don’t cover fridges or freezers.

Before starting his own company almost ten years ago, Ian had spent the previous 30 years working with a number of the country’s leading national appliance repair companies.

The last 12 months have proved a very challenging time for many businesses, but Ian points out the benefits it has brought to his company, saying: “More and more people want a local service. One of the main drivers to set up on my own was to know that I could deliver a more personal service to customers than offered by the national players.”

And that is exactly what Ian is doing – not just in repair work but also in sourcing and fitting new appliances. As Ian explains: “We are sole local agents for Ebac washing machines – a high quality British made appliance which come with a full seven year warranty. We can also supply and install all other appliances and are happy to advise on what is best for each customer’s needs.”

The company is Ian – with support from his family in the office.We asked what has been his greatest achievement in his working career: “Creating a successful business from scratch … with only a laptop and a borrowed car!”

Finally, we asked Ian the question we ask all who feature on our profiles – what would they recommend for someone visiting Cupar for the first time or for the first time in a long time? “Play golf at Cupar Golf Club. It is the oldest nine hole golf course in the world. And enjoy a meal in the clubhouse after your game.”
