Cupar – Dementia Friendly?
This Blog has been produced from material first created and co-produced as part of the Dementia Friendly Glenrothes Project – funded by the Glenrothes Local Area Committee, Fife Health and Social Care Partnership, Fife Council and Alzheimer Scotland.
We’d like to thank Ruth McCabe from Fife Council for sharing this information and hope it is useful. Please share any of the information to help those who might need it.
Developing a Dementia Friendly Community helps people living with a diagnosis of dementia and their families and friends to stay at home in the place they know best … and to be able to continue to do all the things they would have done before they were diagnosed. That means going to local cafes, pubs, clubs, the library, sporting activities and continuing to attend the church. If the world can become dementia friendly then people directly affected by it will be confident to be supported wherever they go.
Ruth explains: “Dementia Friendly Communities are driven by people living with the illness and they identify priority areas for development and approaches. To become Dementia Friendly, organisations, businesses and services are encouraged to look at their physical space to make sure signage promotes easy access and way finding. They’re also expected to invite their staff to become Dementia Friends.“
This can be achieved through a 15 minute on line course or through an hour long face to face training session. In Cupar, we’re pleased to report that the Nationwide Building Society has undertaken the training and their staff are trained as Dementia Friends. Hats off to them!
If you run a business or organisation in town and are interested in being involved in becoming Dementia Friendly, Ruth would be delighted to hear from you. You can call her on 03451 555555, X473858 or email her – Ruth.McCabe@fife.gov.uk
