Golf’s Away Day
Cupar Golf Club celebrated its annual away day with the prestigious Peripatetic (‘Peri’) Cup competition. This year’s event marked the 151st anniversary of the contest, first held in 1873 at Elie Golf Club.
The Peri Trophy, a magnificent original Victorian trophy, is currently displayed at the British Golf Museum in St Andrews, symbolising the long-standing tradition of this historic competition.
This year’s competition took place at Auchterarder Golf Club, where 20 members of Cupar Golf Club competed fiercely for the coveted Peri. Under bright, sunny skies, the course was immaculately presented, offering a challenging test for the players with its fast-running greens, strategically placed bunkers, and several water hazards.
Club Captain Scott Douglas led the field by teeing off first, setting the stage for an intense day of golf. By the end of the competition, it was Gordon McKinnie who emerged victorious, posting the lowest net score of 68 to claim the Peri Trophy. Stewart Wilson followed in second place with a score of 72, while Martin Kirkbride secured third place with a score of 75.
In addition to the Peri Cup, Duncan Ross delivered an impressive performance, shooting the lowest scratch score of 71 to win the Tailabout Cup.
The afternoon saw the players participate in a fun-filled Texas Scramble over 10 holes, with the team of Scott Douglas, Ian Purvis, Gordon McKinnie, and Hugh Ironside securing the win with the lowest team score.
The day concluded with a well-deserved meal and refreshments, during which Captain Scott Douglas presented the Peri and Tailabout Cups, along with other prizes. In his closing remarks, Douglas congratulated the winners and expressed his gratitude to Auchterarder Golf Club for their hospitality.
The event was also attended by club president Joe Manson and vice president John Houston, who shared fond memories of learning to play golf at Auchterarder.
