A focus on the maker …

Anyone walking along Crossgate of late will have noticed the splash of colour that’s around the entrance to Number 54. It is the new home of Pretty Little Scents & Crafts who have relocated from Bonnygate. We caught up with owner, Sam, to discover more about her move and what she has planned for the months ahead …

Sam tells us that her love for art and crafts began when she was a young child: “It has always been a passion of mine. After gaining my higher art qualification at high school, I went on to study spatial design at art college.

When Sam became a Mum (she has three children) she continued crafting through motherhood: “I created and crafted many different items – from loving pebble art, decorating eggs, painting, card making, and I had my first business in making handcrafted wedding stationery.

Waxing lyrical …

As with so many, it was the lockdown in 2020 that saw Sam take a different step: “I started to make wax melts. There was a growing demand as so many people were stuck at home.” Sam’s products are all “individually hand poured and created with top-quality ingredients“. Sam adds: “They are cruelty-free and emit no harmful pollutants or chemicals. Our packaging is also all eco-friendly, being either recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, or reusable.

Throughout 2021-2022, Sam attended college – studying jewellery making. “I went on to win best first year and best overall in the yearly gemset competition. I then won in my 2nd year, winning an internship with a well-known jeweller in England.

Sam “took the plunge” and opened her store on Bonnygate. Her product range continued to grow, expanding to sell home fragrance, pebble art and seaglass frames, jewellery, gifts, and handcrafted cards.

Very soon she was outgrowing the Bonnygate space. “I have been looking for additional space for some time. It needed to be right – not only to have the right retail area but also more space for my designing, making and pouring.

The premises on Crossgate came up and Sam jumped at it. “It is a great space and I am delighted to have been able to take the whole of the ground floor.”

She has transformed the shop with new flooring and display units. She has also added new ranges to her collection: “I now make reed diffusers and wax luxury melts – and even car diffusers, carpet freshners, hoover discs, room mists, and much more!

There are certain times of year that are busier than others. Sam’s relocation coincided with Valentine’s and she has been delighted to meet many new customers who have discovered her store.

Mother’s Day and Easter are next on the calendar – and the shop is bursting with new products in time for the Spring. But it is not just what is on the shelves that is on offer. Sam explains: “I also make bespoke items, so if you are looking for something unique, just ask. I am always happy to discuss new ideas and commissions.

Breaking news …

And the news just gets better and better for Sam. Pretty Little Scents & Crafts has just been nominated as ‘Best Gift Shop’ in Fife in the Scotland Business Awards 2024.
