Market in your diary …

Visiting the next Cupar Market? Don’t forget to take time out from your shopping to enjoy a free concert being given at St James the Great Episcopal Church on St Catherine Street – the latest in their series of Market Day Concerts.

On Saturday 21 February, the University of St Andrews Madrigal Group – a student-run chamber choir of around 15 singers – will be performing at lunchtime as part of their 80th anniversary celebrations.

The group has performed and toured annually since 1946 and their performance in Cupar is hot on the heels of their international tour to Prague – and ahead of their annual UK-wide tour this Spring.

Directed by the Campbell Watterson Organ Scholar, Daniel Toombs, the Madrigal Group will sing a typically broad repertoire encompassing the pan-European Renaissance music which has traditionally provided the group’s calling card.

The programme includes madrigals by Clement Janequin, Thomas Morley and Thomas Tomkins, as well as 19th and 20th century part-songs by, among others, Sir Charles H.H. Parry and Sir Edward Elgar.

The concert, which will last 30 minutes, begins at noon. Refreshments, including home baking will be served at the conclusion.

Church’s Rector, the Rev Sarah Miller, says: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the venerable St Andrews Madrigal Group to St James” adding: “It’s a privilege for us to be able to host them as part of their anniversary season, and we hope that the combination of fine music and hospitality will once again tempt a large audience in from the winter weather.”

Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of both St James and the Madrigal Group.

All are welcome.
