Cupar Flower Show celebrates President’s 50th anniversary
Horticulturalists and gardening enthusiasts flocked to the Corn Exchange in August for the 2022 Cupar Flower Show to display some of the most beautiful flowers and vegetables in the area. This report is from the Show … and includes a full listing of all prize winners who came from Cupar and across north east Fife to be a part of this great show’s long-awaited return!
“Members of the public were welcomed to the upper hall to the smell of sweet peas provided by Tom Nelson and William Loudon and numerous colourful vases of dahlias and other cut flowers. A fantastic display of pot plants was also on show with new exhibitor Bruce McLeod from Meigle taking home the Miss Low Challenge Trophy for the best pot plant exhibit.
It was nice to see so many floral art exhibitions this year, with Ann Duff of Balmullo taking the best exhibit in the class recognising the current President, Les Wheelans’s contribution of 50 years to the Society.
Ted Low from Strathkinness almost had all the silverwear from the vegetable section, but William Loudon hampered that by taking top spot for potatoes.
Crafters and bakers alike went the extra mile this year. Sadie Harris, a new exhibitor to the show created a post box cover which was sited in the Bonnygate until a few days before the show. It was presented by her grandchildren Primrose and Finlay Lighten as a hoop (photographed) to Les, who was completely overwhelmed by the kind words that have been passed to him on reaching this [50th year] milestone. A commemorative sundial was presented to him by Wendy Chamberlain, MP, from fellow committee members.
It was great to be able to put on a show after a two-year gap due to the Covid pandemic, explained Debbie Peebles, Vice-President. It was equally encouraging to see a significant number of new faces in and around the hall and the number of new exhibitors. Hopefully this will be a bit of a turning point for the Society as more people who have turned to their gardens during lockdown, will get involved in the community event.
Guess the weight of the cake, which is very kindly sponsored by Fisher & Donaldson, was won by Margaret Buist, Cupar. The hamper was won by Natalie Lighten, Cupar. Thank you to all who donated hamper and raffle prizes or baked for the cake and candy stall.”

The Society has told us that it could not put shows such as that enjoyed by so many in Cupar if it were not for the committee and volunteers who give up their valuable time to help out. If you are interested in joining, please contact Wanda Wheelans by this email link or visit their website here.
Date for your diary …
The 2023 Show will take place on Saturday 19th August.
