Travel Pop-Up Comes to Cupar

Many people in and around Cupar will know the name Gail Brunton. Gail ran Eden Escapes in Cupar but had to close the business as a result of the pandemic and resulting lockdowns. Now Gail is back – and will be running a pop-up travel shop, delivered for and on behalf of DP&L Travel. Gail explains more …

It was at college studying Business Studies when Gail “fell in love with all things travel.” She says: “One of my subjects was ‘Travel & Tourism’ and our lecturer was a manager in the local Thomas Cook store. She gave me the opportunity of work experience and that was me … hooked!” Gail adds: “I loved the buzz as well as exploring lots of different destinations, sharing the knowledge I learned with customers.

It was almost forty years ago when Gail first started working in the travel industry: “That was with AT Mays in Glasgow.” Four years later, Gail married and she moved to Cupar.

After relocating, I worked in Lorettas Travel before moving to Thomas Cook in Perth. I was there for several years, but then the opportunity arose to return to Cupar.” She became branch manager for Co-Operative Travel and worked there for 11 years.

Gail adds: “By this stage of my career, I had built up great experience and really wanted to try something new. The biggest achievement of my career was planning, opening and then running my own travel company – Eden Escapes. We had a very successful eight years … until Covid hit.

Forced to close her doors, Gail worked as the manager in Cupar’s Post Office for a while – but it was not for her. She missed the travel sector enormously, explaining: “That was a difficult and stressful job … much easier and satisfying doing a complex round the world itinerary!

And then her next move – back into the industry she has loved since college – taking on a role with DP&L Travel in St Andrews: “I am loving it!

The DP&L group was established in 1826. They are a large company but remain independent with decades of experience at a local level. Gails says: “I have worked in the industry for many years. DP&L Travel has everything you need in a travel agency.

Popping up in Cupar …

And now Gail returns to Cupar again … this time, with a Pop-Up Travel Shop. She explains: “At DP&L, we help customers to plan so many different types of holidays – from honeymoons, beach and family holidays to ski and winter sports, long haul and all manner of adventure vacations.” Gail adds: “We are really pleased to have opted into CuparNow. We recognise the value brought by them not only in their community support work but also in being able to share messaging with such a wide audience across Cupar & Country. We very much look forward to welcoming customers to our fortnightly pop-up travel shops.”

DP&L’s Cupar Pop-Up will be at The Howe of Fife Rugby Club every second Thursday evening – from 1730 until 1930 – starting Thursday 14th September.

Finally, we ask everyone featuring on our Blog what they would recommend to someone visiting Cupar for the first time, or for the first time in a long time? Gail says: “Cupar is a very friendly town with a great community feel about it. There are some lovely boutique shops and wee cafes serving up great treats! The locals really do care about their town – and I am very much looking forward to popping back each fortnight to catch up with some friendly faces!
