Eden Veterinary Practice (at the base of the slip road entrance to the estate) were nominated six times in a row for Practice of the Year in the Petplan Veterinary Awards. The practice’s owner, Ainslie Smith, grew up surrounded by animals on his father’s farm in North-East Fife so is no stranger to creatures both great and small. He has always been interested in veterinary science and caring for animals, saying: “Whenever a vet came to the farm I would follow them everywhere, bombarding them with questions. I loved that they got to work with a variety of animals all day every day and I knew from a young age that that’s what I wanted to do too.” As well as being surrounded by animals as a youngster, Ainslie was a fan of James Herriot, the famous vet who wrote a series of semi-autobiographical books about his experiences. Ainslie adds: “I started my own business to apply the ‘James Herriot ethos’ to caring for animals. I wanted to offer a friendly, local practice that offered approachable, professional care for all animals including cats and dogs, horses and cattle, and everything in between.” When Ainslie established the practice in 2003, he was the only vet and was supported by two part time receptionists. Since then, Eden has gone from strength-to-strength. Today, they have five full time vets – as well as a team of nurses and receptionists – to deal with the demand for their experience, be it for small animals in house or for large animal on the road. East of Scotland Growers is a farmer-owned cooperative based in Cupar. Their main crops are Broccoli and Cauliflower along with a wider range of vegetable crops produced in fertile Scottish soils over a 180 mile radius. Established in 1987, the cooperative’s purpose is to provide the individual grower with the benefits of being part of a larger group, allowing all members to grow together for the future. To this day the ESG team is still focused on achieving its founding aim by providing the maximum return to grower. They share premises with their new venture: the Growers’ Garden. Essentially, the company is “a bunch of mates (who all happen to be farmers), that decided to do things differently“. The families involved have been living and farming field-by-field in the East of Scotland countryside for generations. Prepping, planting, and harvesting, season-in and season-out. They celebrate the good times and have stuck together in the tough ones. In between time spent in ‘converted barn nightclubs‘ and ‘combine-harvester racing‘, they landed on an idea: supporting sustainable farming by turning their very own fresh vegetables into “awesome healthy snacks” that people really want to eat.
