A2B – Cupar’s Auto Centre

Many people local to Cupar will have seen cars from Gibbs Taxis on the roads over the years. The success of the firm led to the launch of another company – A2B Autocentre. We caught up with founder and owner, Ian Gibb, to discover more …

Ian Gibb launched his own taxi company over a decade ago. Through the years, the firm dealt almost exclusively with contract work – so has never promoted itself as others do. The firm was successful, delivering a quality service for their contract clients – and grew. As it did, so did their need for regular servicing of their fleet.

Ian explains “A2B Autocentre was founded in 2022 out of that necessity – the need for quality maintenance of my own fleet which is absolutely crucial when you’re running a taxi service.” He felt his needs were not being met adequately by local garage operators. He’d tried a number of them but decided he needed surety of quality service ‘in house’.

Ian launched A2B and soon discovered that “word of mouth spread” on their servicing. He says: “We found that once in place, as well as dealing with my own fleet’s requirements, my technical team were also carrying out work for other taxi operators.” And from there, there was a “natural progressions“.

Ian adds: “We had recruited and employed a group of really good technicians so decided to open the service to the general public. With more technicians we have been able to offer a greater array of services including becoming a full DVSA-authorised MOT Station.

Local and regional

A2B Autocentre is an independently-owned and operated servicing and repair garage based on Preston Hall Industrial Estate in Cupar. For those who know the site, they operate from the former Travis Perkins premises, close to Fishers Laundry.

Much of their commercial work comes from the town and close by. But as their reputation has grown, so has the area covered by their services.

Ian explains: “I know all garages will claim that they are driven by a commitment to delivering a high standard of service, but not all garages are servicing their own vehicles. We are, and that sets us apart. Our customers know we are different not least of all because we are keeping our own vehicles on the road. They receive great service, friendly advice and top quality parts. As a result, A2B Autocentre continues to grow from strength to strength.

One stop …

And it is A2B Autocentre’s flexibility that Ian believes is their USP. He says: “We can offer a complete solution for your vehicles’ upkeep and servicing. Whether we are dealing with large fleet customers or one-to-one with local customers, we provide a ‘one stop’ service using top brands and OE quality parts. We have all aspects of servicing and repairs covered. We believe there’s no one who can get your car serviced, repaired and back on the road quicker than we can!

And the proof is in the pudding. Ian cites “repeat business”, adding: “We are delighted with the reputation we are building – the amount of customers we have returning for their regular servicing is testament to that fact.

Perfect Ten

Ian is very proud of what they have built – a team of ten looking after the day-to-day delivery of all their services. He says: “There’s me – the MD, my son John who is the Workshop Manager, and Brian on the front desk … he is an excellent point of contact with the customer. Additionally, we have a further seven technicians and admin staff, all helping to ensure operations run as smoothly as possible.

We asked Ian what he sees as his greatest achievement: “Building up two businesses to the point that I can ensure financial stability for my family for the foreseeable future.” And who has inspired him in his business life? “Sir Tom Farmer for one. The man built an incredibly successful business model with Kwik-Fit, sold the business and looks to be doing the same again with Farmer Autocare.

Finally, we ask all featuring on our Blog what you would recommend to someone visiting Cupar for the first time, or for the first time in a long time? “Head to Fisher and Donaldsons! A bacon roll and Tipsy Cake there are a must!
