Trading Places: Part 1

When we started the CuparNow project, we identified 379 businesses in Cupar. That number surprised most. It is only when you start to explore and walk the town – the centre as well as the areas on the outskirts – that you realise the breadth and depth of Cupar’s business offering. In the first of three features, we take a walk around Prestonhall Industrial Estate (that’s the one furthest out as you head east) to discover some exceptional businesses … from international players to family run, from home-grown, nuts ‘n’ bolts business that help us all live our lives – to cutting edge technology …

The market leader for laundry and textile rental services in Scotland, Fishers employs more than 800 people across seven sites in Scotland and the North East of England. They have grown and prospered by sticking to core family values: serving customers with hard work, honesty and value for money. Follow this link if you’re looking for work opportunities with Fishers. And you can find more on them day to day by following their Facebook page. This wee YouTube clip may be a couple of years old, but it shows the company’s dedication in washing, drying, ironing and then delivering 2 million pieces of laundry – every week!

East of Scotland Growers & Growers Garden

ESG are a farmer owned cooperative based in Cupar. Their main crops are Broccoli and Cauliflower along with a wider range of vegetable crops produced in fertile Scottish soils over a 180 mile radius.

Established in 1987, the cooperative’s purpose is to provide the individual grower with the benefits of being part of a larger group, allowing all members to grow together for the future. To this day the ESG team is still focused on achieving its founding aim by providing the maximum return to grower.

They share premises with their new venture: the Growers’ Garden. Essentially, the company is “a bunch of mates (who all happen to be farmers), that decided to do things differently“. The families involved have been living and farming field-by-field in the East of Scotland countryside for generations. Prepping, planting, and harvesting, season-in and season-out. They celebrate the good times and have stuck together in the tough ones. In between time spent in converted barn nightclubs‘ and ‘combine-harvester racing‘, they landed on an idea: supporting sustainable farming by turning their very own fresh vegetables into “awesome healthy snacks” that people really want to eat. A sustainable snack – the perfect idea to bring together their love for both the environment and food (especially crisps!).
