Just off Cupar’s Crossgate – in the George Inn Wynd – is a gem of an eatery, housed in the former Johnson Press building, right in the heart of town. We took time out to catch up with Grant Hughes, who with his brother Paul, runs The Press Caf and Bistro.
Grant’s roots are firmly in Cupar. He says: “I grew up in Cupar. When at school, I had a part time job that helped me to fund my degree – and to travel.” His early work and travels made him realise that he was suited to the hospitality industry. He explains that he was influenced by one employer in particular: “I worked with the owners for a long period of time. They were driven and made a very good lifestyle from their work and commitment.”
He continued to work for pubs and restaurants – gaining experience and learning skills. Returning to Cupar, he looked to start a new business – believing the town offered he and his family a great opportunity. Grant adds: “Being local to the town – having strong ties – is a great benefit. It has helped us develop a strong reputation by offering quality food and service using as many local suppliers as possible – contributing positively to Cupar’s business environment.”
Grant and Paul employ a total of 10 people local to Cupar. They offer a wide selection of freshly prepared dishes – available to sit in or take away. Their goal? “To use only the finest produce sourced locally from artisan suppliers to offer a high quality dining experience“.
Grant says that having two children is his greatest personal achievement. We’re just lucky that he and his brother have chosen Cupar as the place where they want to raise their families – and invest their time and talents in creating such a great addition to the town’s menu of places to eat and drink. Cupar is where Paul set out on his cooking career. His first steps on the road to being an accomplished chef started at just 15 – working at Eden House Hotel in the town. He studied professional cookery at Elmwood before working for Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews, the restaurant recognised with two AA rosettes at the time.
So the next time you are in Cupar – whether you are looking for breakfast or brunch, cake and coffee or a full lunch or dinner – why not try them out?
Inside, the bistro opens up – tardis like! You walk through the galley-style kitchen (where take away coffee and more are available) – and enter the two-tier Bistro. Well spaced wooden chairs and tables – together with more casual sofa seating – are on the ground floor. And there’s an open, upstairs gallery – often home to local groups who use the Bistro as a meeting destination whilst they enjoy food and drinks to order.
Outside – in the Wynd – is a south-facing wee terrace area where you can enjoy their full menu as well as smaller plates. On a cold day – enjoy a hot choc – and on those longer, summer days and evenings, you can sample many a cold beverage… from fine wines and beers to cocktails.

Grant says: “If your visit coincides with the Farmers’ Market – that’s a must. Crossgate becomes the home to numerous stalls from all kinds of producers and suppliers showcasing some great food, drink, arts and crafts. And if you’d like to explore, take a walk along the town’s river trail. Its a great stroll – whatever the season.”
The Press Caf and Bistro is open Tue-Wed, 0830-1700 and on Thu-Sat from 0830-late.
